RosieQueen Latifah was born Dana Elaine Owens on March 18, 1970, in Newark, New Jersey. The second daughter of Lance and Rita Owens, Latifah is most well-known for her work in social politics, acting skills and ability to rhyme. At 8 years old her Muslim cousin gave her the name Latifah which translates to "delicate" as well as "sensitive" in Arabic. Latifah sang with the Shiloh Baptist Church's Choir located in Bloomfield, New Jersey. She had her first public performance when she sang "Home" as one of the two Dorothys in a musical production of The Wizard of Oz. Latifah's mother was a catalyst. She was extremely in touch with students and the music. She invited Mark James, a local disc jockey who is known as D.J. Mark the 45 King, to perform at a school dance.
